The Victorian Era formally began when Victoria was crowned Queen of England in 1837 and ended with her death in 1901. Society as a whole was changing immensely due to the Industrial Revolution. While societal mores and class systems still dictated everyday life, the common person was now faced with a changing world that included high unemployment and poverty. Socialist movements began developing around the world to help remedy the situation.
Throughout the era, writers began to publish books that tackled difficult social issues such as mental illness, education, social class, poverty, women's roles in society, and the role orphanages in everyday life. Below are lists of resources to help you investigate these topics more deeply.
For more historical information on the life and times of Queen Victoria watch the PBS show Victoria or read the book "Victoria: the Queen" by Julia Baird, located in our library at 921 Vic.
